Due to entering college, Ronnie stopped going to the gym, so he stopped pumping up his muscles. During this period, he was interested in American football and was on a team coached by Eddie Robinson, who was considered a fairly famous and successful coach at that time. As part of his team, he even took part in the Super Bowl, which took place in New Orleans.

When Ronnie graduated from university and received a diploma in accounting, he began looking for a job in this specialty. He managed to get a job as a manager at Dominos Pizza, but after a while he realized that “accounting” was not his profile. His brain simply began to melt from numbers and accounting, so he decided to go to work for the police, as he constantly wanted to be useful to people and society. To become a patrolman, he studied for some time at the police academy. Upon graduation, he received his desired position as a police patrolman in Arlington. After that, he calmed down, believing that he had found himself in this life, since he liked his new job. Realizing that a police officer must have strength and endurance, Ronnie Coleman again went to the gym to pump up his muscles and make up for lost time.

Often, the very appearance of a patrolman made it possible to pacify lawbreakers. In fact, being a policeman gave him great pleasure, therefore, with the answer to the questions: “Why don’t you quit your job and devote yourself completely to sports?”, Ronnie always had the same answer: “I’m doing a very important job - I help people!” This beloved profession always helped him not to get hung up on this sport. In April 1990, during a routine workout, the owner of the gym approached him and invited him to participate in the Mr. Texas tournament. If he wins, the owner promised Ronnie to give him a subscription, completely free, for a whole year of classes in his gym. Ronnie was satisfied with such conditions of participation and he agreed. He managed to win and receive an annual subscription. This was his first and serious success, which determined his future fate.

Yes, I inherited good genetics from my parents. From the age of 12 I played football, basketball and baseball. Imagine, adults came up to me right on the field and patted me on the shoulder: “Drop that hardware, son!” You took it on too early!..” I explained to them that I had never even seen a barbell, but they didn’t believe me. All this intrigued me so much that I actually went to the gym - I wanted to figure out for myself what kind of sport I was “doing.” I looked at it, touched the handles of the exercise machines, and I liked it. So I started training. You can write it this way: Coleman started bodybuilding at the age of 12. Although no, I’m lying. The gym turned out to be for powerlifters. So I started powerlifting at the age of 12. Yes, I actually didn’t understand then what the difference was between bodybuilding and other strength sports.

Starting out in powerlifting, how did you get into bodybuilding?

I didn’t even think about bodybuilding for a long time. After school, I immediately went to college so that I wouldn’t have to sweep the streets later. And in college they don’t even want to know anything about exercise equipment except football - they say, a collective game strengthens friendship between students. I graduated from college with an accounting degree. I worked for two years and was horrified - am I really going to be counting other people’s money for the rest of my life! In short, I gave up everything and entered police school. Well, there’s no way without “pitching”, so I returned to the barbell. Once I went to the city gym, and there the owner grabbed me by the elbow: I’ll give you a free membership to my gym if you agree to compete in the tournament!

So what next?

It was in January 1990, and the tournament was coming up in April. It was called "Mr. Texas". I actually went there only for the sake of a subscription, but it turned out that I “killed” everyone in my category, and then everyone in general who came and became the absolute champion. To be honest, I liked the job: you don’t have to put yourself out there too much. Powerlifting added a lot of muscle to me, then I ran a lot - my chest is wide.

You haven't been an amateur for too long, have you?

Yes, the next year I went to the World Amateur Championship and won. And immediately received a professional card. By the way, it was then that it became clear to me what a gulf lies between amateur and professional bodybuilding. Think about it, in order to win a professional tournament, I had to literally bust my ass in training for 4 years. First, I won the Canada Cup '95, then again I became first at the same tournament in 1996. And in the same year I became second at the “Night of Champions” tournament.

You know, Ronnie, the most amazing thing about you is not your victories. I admit, I was simply stunned when I found out that you continue to work in the police. You work there full time, in addition you often work in shifts and are on duty at night. Some pros who do nothing at all except “pump up” complain that they don’t have enough 24 hours in a day to become champions!

I'll tell you this: I never dreamed of becoming a professional bodybuilder. And in general, I don’t like this game of Russian roulette at all. At work I get paid regularly, I have free medical care, and some other benefits. And if I decide to bet on tournament prizes, it looks like one day I’ll go collect bottles.

If working in the police does not interfere with your training, then maybe training interferes with working in the police?

Come on! Imagine, somewhere on the sidewalk a fuss started - they were waving knives. I drive up in a huge police car, get out and people see that I’m even bigger than my car. Believe me, everyone immediately becomes as quiet as sheep. In general, my schedule is like this. I've been on duty since midday, so I train in the morning. I arrive late, spin the stationary bike, drink a protein shake, watch TV and go to bed. The only problem is with food. It's not good when people see a policeman in a patrol car eating chicken.

I can’t believe it’s so simple for you!

Eh, it's all a matter of attitude. If you yourself decided to live such a life, what are the problems? I know that this is necessary, and if it is necessary, then why dream of heaven?

Let's talk in detail about the training.

In the off-season I lift 5 times a week, and before a tournament 6 times, and I work out each muscle group twice a week. I divide all exercises into pressing and pulling. I do some on one day, and others on another. In terms of muscles, it turns out that first I “pump up” the chest, deltoids and triceps (press exercises), and then the back and biceps (traction exercises). On the third day - quadriceps and hamstrings. It turns out three days of training, a day of rest and again three days of “pumping”. What about special moves?

Supersets only. I don't believe in anything complicated. Bodybuilding itself is simple. Muscles grow if you put your soul into training, that's all. If you come to the gym untethered, no techniques will help you, that’s for sure!

Ron, do you have any free time?

No, but I don’t seem to suffer from it. I have a girlfriend, we are going to get married. Her name is Vicki Gates and she is a professional bodybuilder. We have common interests. She won’t drag me to the cinema when I’m preparing for Olympia.

Ronnie, no matter how you look at it, you are unique. Few bodybuilders are ready to throw in their lot with a female bodybuilder.

Well, a bodybuilder seems to have no age - she’s always fit and slender. But in general, community of interests comes first for me. What kind of family is this if husband and wife are pulling in different directions?

Ron, aren't you afraid that if you talk about your genetics, you won't be interesting to fans anymore? They will think that you are too different from them and your experience does not suit them.

At first, I myself thought that, thanks to genetics, I could easily enter heaven. But the whole problem is that all professionals have amazing genetics, just like the choice. Take Sonbati or Yats or Levron.

I'd like to see their parents! So I don’t have any real advantages, except for one thing: I really like “muscle”!

The strength complex meant 1-2 techniques, approaches with heavy weights with a minimum number of repetitions. In total there were 5 sets, sometimes 4, no more than 10 takes with pauses between sessions of 3 minutes. The athlete is still convinced that 2-3 lifting exercises are enough for muscle hypertrophy; Coleman was against working to the point of muscle failure.

The athlete always performed:

  • platform leg press;
  • classic squats;
  • deadlift.

Pumping was based on moderate weights and multiple sets and doubles: 3-4 techniques in 12-15 repetitions and the same number of sets with a rest of 1-2 minutes. A month later, he changed places of the complexes, which allowed him to achieve the desired progress.

The program also included separate pumping of target muscles. Coleman pumped his torso and back at the beginning of the block, small muscles - like the biceps and triceps of the arms last. I pumped each group twice in a week. Periodization and proper diet returned the athlete to ideal shape.

  • 2007 - laminectomy. This is an operation that involves removing a small section of vertebral bone tissue in the area above the nerve root, as well as part of the intervertebral disc from underneath it.
  • 2011 - intervertebral disc decompression. This is a microsurgical intervention to remove compression of the disc, freeing the nerve roots and endings.
  • 2011 (December) - removal of the fusion of the cervical vertebrae;
  • 2014 (summer) - alternate replacement of the left and right hip joints. This operation is quite easy and common for ordinary people, but Ronald, for whom leg pressing a ton of weight and squats with a barbell of 400 kg was a normal occurrence, can hardly be called an ordinary person.
  • 2015 - removal of the fusion of the vertebrae in the ridge.
  • 2017 - installation of support bolts in the lumbar spine area. The back is a sore spot for the Olympia champion, and this intervention became so painful that, according to the bodybuilder himself, he wanted to shoot himself more than once, but faith in God and family support helped him overcome difficulties.
  • In 2021, another complex operation occurred. Doctors diagnosed that spinal surgery through the back could not be performed because a lot of scar tissue had formed there. That is why doctors operated on a famous patient through the abdominal cavity. To do this, almost all the insides were taken out, and upon completion they were placed again.

Early December 2015 and Ronnie Coleman in Moscow. On a positive note, I took pictures with everyone and all that. As Ronn said:

“You don’t become champions just like that, let alone 8-time champions. I paid my price. But all the people who line up to take pictures with me are proof that it was not in vain that I gave my all in the hall.”

In Russia, Ronnie used a wheelchair, but after the interview he continued to train. Even then, Coleman knew that the suffering associated with the operations was not over; at least one more surgical intervention was coming. “Bigron” rescheduled it at the beginning of 2021.

Quote: “This is a picture of my spine after another operation. The surgeons worked for 11 hours. Now I have 6 titanium bolts in my back, 2 more and it will be 1 for each victory at Olympia. So let me ask you again, do you still want to become an 8-time Mr. Olympia? You have to pay for such success with incredible pain.”

Another one: As you can see, yes, I am an 8-time Mr. Olympia and yes, I cannot walk. Many may say that I became disabled, lost my mind and all that. Do I have any regrets? If I had a chance to go back in time and live it all over again, would I change anything? Yes, if I could retrace my steps, one day I would do things differently. When squatting 360kg, I would have done 4 reps instead of 2. This is the only thing I regret in my career. Those 2 reps still haunt me, I knew for sure that I had the strength for 4 reps, but I only completed 2 - the only regret in my life.
